From Sketches to Stories
Long before I thought of myself as a writer, I was building worlds in pictures.
The Lanternwild had been living quietly in the back of my mind for years, shaped by things I had always loved. Fantasy, rain, stars, moss-covered forests, cottagecore, and, of course, mice. Ethereal Moon Mousery gave that moonlit woodland feeling a home. Then the mice began becoming more than subjects for my art. They became characters. The sketches became maps. The maps grew histories, traditions, myths, creatures, and places of their own.
Eventually, drawing the world wasn’t enough anymore.
The places I created had stories I wanted to know. The creatures had legends. The maps raised questions that an illustration alone couldn’t answer. So I started writing; not because I had sat down and decided I was going to become a writer, but because the world I was building kept demanding more.
That is how Legends of the Lanternwild and Recovered Notes from the Unspoken Wild began: art first, then curiosity, then lore, and somewhere along the way, whole books.
I still create the same way now. Sometimes a story begins with a sketch. Sometimes with a strange plant, a mouse, a map, a place name, or a question I can’t stop thinking about. I follow it until I find out where it leads.
And apparently, sometimes it leads to a book. ♡
